A clean contemporary summer flyer that captures the outdoor beer garden spirit (not spirit as in the drink).
MARK RONSON – FRONT COVER & SPREAD
Illustrating the front cover is the most important part of the magazine, its the difference between a person picking it up or walking straight past. With the Mark Ronson album just being released and the festival season in full swing, it was really important we capture those elements with bright colours fun cover. The theme from the cover was then carried over to the page design.
FAMILY
It was recently my niece Laurens 7th Birthday. I can’t believe she is seven already. Being the snap happy uncle I am, I thought I’d pop over to her party with my camera. Just moments after stepping into a house full of screaming kids, I took this shot of her hiding behind the curtains. Not sure if they were playing kiss chase, or tag but it captures her essence beautifully.
UNIVERSITY OF WALES
Aspire/Alt – I was given a great opportunity to create two publications for the University of Wales, Newport. The first was Aspire, a publication aimed at postgraduate students. The idea was to strip everything back and deliver them the essentials. We did this by creating case studies, real life examples of students that told their stories about how everything was made possible & how sometimes the idea of something can be a lot more daunting that the thing itself. The second publication was aimed at undergraduates. This approach had to be less clean cut, and more off the way – lots of life, colour and useful tips and treats.
IBIZA
I was lucky enough to experience Ibiza last year. Close friends of mine have been together for 10+ years and the idea of a traditional honeymoon just didn’t appeal to them. They just wanted to spend the time with friends, enjoying the sun and having a party. San Miguel was cheaper than water so as you can imagine! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, here are just a few pictures!
THE ROAD – PHOTOSHOP
If it’s not robots then it’s those end of the world video games and movies. I’ve been hooked on Fall Out 3, and had recently watched a film called The Road (Yes that morbid yet superb movie with Viggo Mortensen in). With these post apocalyptic images firmly implanted into my head I thought I would see if I could create my very own end of days. The hardest part of creating this image was spending hours trawling through stock photos trying to piece together images like a jigsaw puzzle. For it to really work each image had to be in the right perspective and shade to everything else. The elements from each stock photo were carefully cut out (not too precise though as I needed to leave a little bit of a trim so it would give me the room to blend things in) & using the hue and saturation I was able to strip away a lot of the unwanted colour which helped give it that morbid feel I was going for. After a few more hours of tinkering I added shadows and some textured layers (Smoke being the first and film grain being the second). Finally to bring the whole scene together a simple dull grey green was overlayed over the whole document.
OUR TIME TO SHINE – BANNER
With the Ryder cup approaching this drop banner was aimed at encouraging a positive Newport. The concept was based on the word shine.
