A recent personal project of mine, I aimed to demonstrate a pure understanding for digital design.
Earlier this year, I went to Vegas where I didn’t get married but I did do the next best thing. I proposed to my beautiful girlfriend Louise. We have been together for almost 8 years the timing seemed perfect, and of course she said yes.
My entry for the epic shot competition in Empire Magazine!
Empire Magazine, ran a competition to design a poster for a British film called The Killers. Who would have thought it but I came first (left) and fourth (right) – double points hey? Director Carlo Ortu, who judged the entries, said, “The mixture of tinted pictures on a white background made it really stand out. The quotes were well placed and enticing and the ‘How it Hasn’t Won Awards is Beyond Me’ quote nestled in the olive branch film awards symbol gives a lovely nod to the vibe of the film. Overall, I felt this captured what ‘The Killers’ is all about the most and is a very accomplished, professional design.” You can find the article over here!
These were the initial designs submitted to Newport council for their Christmas Campaign. They loved the initial design and with a quick title change to Discover Your Newport the concept became the entire Christmas campaign. This included the design of bus sides, street banners, posters and advertisements for many different publications.
This is a bit of a high five to my favourite show on TV, there is always that worry, will new seasons be better than the old? Does it still capture the magic of the first? Many have tried and failed, but Dexter seems to go from strength to strength. Most of the work took place in illustrator roughly tracing an image from Google. I used a calligraphy style stroke just so the lines weren’t straight and even. Using reds and deep yellows I wanted to capture the warmth of Miami but also the blood spatter from his job. The final few bits were done in Photoshop, overlaying some blood spatter, brush textures and a smudge of paint for the background.

To quote 80′s boy band Bros “When will I will I be famous? When will I see my picture in the paper?” Well I can now answer that question and say I saw my picture in the Voice Magazine on July 2010. With the TJ’s in the square event which was taking place after our print deadline, we needed to come up with a cover that created the impression of a festival atmosphere and people coming together for the love of music. This meant working closely with our photographer and design team, by using an image of a stage, clouds and a massive crowd I was able to bring life to this artwork. Voice also covers many other features, here are a few examples; a product page on the latest in celeb fashion/endorsements, a camping article, plugging local retailers and finally Cineworld encouraged us to put together editorial for them in there current image / branding.
Who said turning 30 was a bad thing? I can’t complain. I had a great party with my nearest and dearest, then a few days later I jetted off to Miami for a week. What a remarkable and beautiful city, full of vibrant greenery and the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. We rented a car for a week and really got to take in the sites, sounds and occasional photo, ok maybe I took more than a few photo’s! Using my Panasonic Lumix G1 Camera with 45mm-200mm lens, I was able to get close portrait, macro and even a few long exposure night shots. I fell in love with Miami and America in general I can’t wait to go back and take more photos.
Here’s a logo I submitted for a design tender recently. The brief stated that the design was to be a strong brand and created from scratch, also to be fun, colourful and easy to understand. I wanted to develop fun illustrations using visual elements of Newport (Riverfront, Wave, River Usk, Transporter Bridge and Castle) but not so much that it alienated potential audiences outside of Newport.
Holy Transylvania the design for this halloween flyer was based on the 1960′s television show The Munsters.
